LEARNING “ON THE ROAD”
In our deputation travels we were given an opportunity to visit a friend who has planted a Mosaic Ministry as a Church Planting effort. This was a learning opportunity rather than a deputation opportunity … though we are really learning from every Sunday’s experiences.
PEOPLE & STRATEGY: The two primary features that makes a church a “Mosaic Church” is its people and strategy. The people in the service consisted of 50% european “people groups” and the other 50% of various minority “people groups.” Most of these families are not originally from the surrounding area but have moved there in the past 6-10 years. Their having been “relocated” and in a totally new and different environment is a key to this approach to ministry.
SELECTING THE RIGHT REGION: After surveys were completed and area in need of such a church was identified. The church was started intentionally in this area where all the people groups were already integrated (similar areas in South Africa are: Blouberg,Tableview, Leondale, Germiston etc.). Only a small group of the congregation were originally from the area +-15%.
COMMUNICATING LOVE: On our arrival at this “Mosaic church plant” we could see that the service began with a music program similar to any other church but we were welcomed by two ladies and there was a time or part of the service time when individuals, like these ladies could be involved … by reading the prayer request and praying for the various items. As for all of those who attended the pastor clearly explained and emphasized worshipping together - as an aspect of Christianity that brings all “people groups” together. He clearly focussed his pastoral teaching and discipleship on the imperative of the church demonstrating an active or open love for one-another.
We have found this learning opportunity to be very helpful towards our surveying of a possible new church-plant in the future.
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
if ye have love one to another.”
if ye have love one to another.”
John 13:35
